Day 9

We started the day slowly, walking to Starbucks for coffee and food, plus good aircon and wifi.
Komang turned up at 2 pm, right on time as usual to take us to Uluwatu.  We aimed to be there for the sunset performance of the Kecak dance, so asked him to make a stop or two on the way.  He suggested seeing a big statue, which I must admit did not excite me at first, but then we realised that it wasn't just a big statue, but a ginormous one in a reserve called GWK Cultural Park.  The head was begun in the 80s but then after the 2002 bombings work slowed right down.  Now however it is full steam ahead, and the whole statue is due to be completed by August next year.  It will be pretty impressive, being the height of a 21 storey building I believe.

Getting up to the statue would not be possible in a wheelchair, and even the ampitheatre where we watched the Balinese dance afterwards would be difficult.  However it would be worth asking the question, as with more and more tourists coming from other parts of the world, Bali should really start working on its accessibility issues.
